Brevard Zoo

A few weeks ago we went to Florida and we saw giraffes and gibbons. We also saw a rhinoceros. A giant big turtle. We saw a boa constrictor and his poop. We saw a sign that said "what would you do with ten tons of poo?" This was in Florida at the zoo. It helps save the world to learn about animals. So you know how to take care of them because other people don't take care of animals.

We went kayaking at the zoo. Kayaking is better than driving, not using electricity, just an oar or a paddle. But you don't want a small kayak because the alligators might eat you.

Whip it good

For my sister's birthday today I whipped whip cream by hand. It helps the environment because umm we used organic cream and agave nectar. Not alot of sugar, agave has some, but not alot. We used it by hand and didn't use the electric one so we didn't waste electricity. And we don't buy whip cream in bottles 'cause it comes in plastic and has too much chemicals and sugar.

It tasted good.

Thinking Green

<-- (Me holding my compost)

We went to the Earth Fair yesterday (Global Green Expo) and we got pencils made out of old jeans, another pencil made out of recycled newspaper that smells like watermelon. We also got smoked popcorn.

We did compost. I got a worm for a pet and I have to feed it every three days, take the newspaper out every week and grab it and mush it and fluff it up.

We saw a gigantic sandcastle. It was like 20 computers big!

We got magnetic "green" poetry. We also made plants that were being sent to people with no money, no food, no nothing. We also decorated bags that you can use over and use over and over and over and over and over again.

My sister helped paint a mural. Also my mom. Someone read the Great Kapok Tree to me at story time. It's about a guy trying to cut down a tree with a bunch of animals living there. He doesn't cut it, because he falls asleep and the animals come up to his ear and keep telling him to not cut down the tree because all of them live there.

I touched a horse shoe crab. They are 400 million years old. They were around before dinosaurs. I touched a star fish a sea urchin, and I saw a bear skull. It looked like a dinosaur skull to me.

There was a band and I don't know what song they were playing. It was good.

We saw a lot of books. A bunch were about polar bears. Their home is getting destroyed. The ice is melting.

Happy Earth Day

Today I read the Lorax, by Dr. Seuss. It teaches us to not put pollution in the air, to not cut down trees. To think about where all the animals live. We don't need to build so many factories and we don't need so much stuff. Just enough to buy a house and clothes and food to eat.

Reusing Bags for the Titi Monkeys

We get five cents off our bill every time we use one of our own shopping bags at Whole Foods.  That's recycling.  Mom said that I can have all those nickels that we save to give to charity.  I'm going to give it to Kids Saving the Rainforest in Costa Rica.   They help the titi monkeys by building monkey bridges so that they don't get electrocuted crossing telephone wires.  There are only 1,2oo left in the world.  They plant trees, too.

Supporting our Library

Today we went to the library. We got recycled books for very cheap. And also tomorrow at the Westfield Library you can buy a bag for $5 and can fill it up for free with books. All the money helps the library. It's cool because the library can get nicer. Buying recycled books is good because you don't have to cut down more trees, you can use them over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. And all of them were donated.

Trees and Stuff

I think it's a good idea to plant as many trees and stuff like beans, fruits and all that kind of stuff as you can. You can buy seeds at Whole Foods. Trees help keep the air clean. Flowers look nice. Bees like them. So do butterflies. It's good to plant as many trees as you can in the rain forest so more animals can have homes.

Things I Do

I recycle bottles, glass, cans, plastic, cardboard
I don't litter
I don't really pick flowers
I reuse bags
I don't step on bugs
I plant things
I write on the back of paper

My trip to the farm

Yesterday, we went to visit Fosterfield's Historical Living Farm.  We saw big wild fat pigs, sheep with their new baby lambs, and geese.  There were cows, roosters, a cat and giant horses, big and thick.  I churned butter in the old-fashioned house.  We used a washboard to clean clothes and clips to hang laundry on the line.  We pumped water from an old barrel.

My sister found an egg in the chicken coup.

It was great!

I'm just a kid

Hi, I'm Benjamin.  I'm almost 6.  I just lost my first tooth and my second one is loose.  I'm old enough to help clean the kitchen and help take care of my sisters, so I think I'm old enough to start doing things to help the whole world.

We already do some things at home.  Recycling and respecting nature.  Going to different places and learning about the world makes us care even more.  So I already started saving the world a little.  But I'm going to do more.  I'm going to try to do something every day.  And I'll share it so people can copy me if they want.
